Review of The Silent Sea

For this post I will mix it up. I am writing about a show instead of a game. The show “The Silent Sea” is a Korean film that features a scientist named Song Ji-an. She gets requested to join a mission to a moon base to help an organization retrieve an asset. When they get to the station they notice that the crew on board mysteriously dies. Meanwhile Korea is going through a major drought. As a result of this drought there is a caste system created that is based on how much water people have access to. The people with less water have less access to the resources they need. One of the crew members on the trip starts exhibiting weird symptoms. He starts excessively sweating and water starts to pour out his ears, along with his veins darkening around his face until ultimately he starts to excessively vomit water(almost like a fire hydrant when its valve is opened). One of the doctors in the crew performs this operation on him to help him breathe. The Doctor proceeds to make an incision in his throat to open his airway for a tube to help him breathe. But The doctor was unsuccessful in saving his life. After his death the doctors performed an autopsy on his body. They found strange water in his body. The doctors conclude that it is water at a physical and qualitative level but they know it is not water based on what it did to the body of their crew mate. One of the doctors decided to run some tests on the water found in the body by dropping some of their blood into the water in a small petri dish(small plastic disk used for liquid experiments; they look like small frisbees). After a few moments the water starts dividing like cells exponentially. The doctors panic and freeze it with liquid nitrogen from the fire extinguisher. The doctors confront the crew leader about their findings accusing him that he knew the cargo was dangerous. The leader confronts the organization about the cargo and gets no answers from them. Throughout the beginning of the movie there are strong hints letting the audience know that the crew on screen are not alone. One of the first instances of this is when one of the crew mates asks doctor Song to help him with something in the cargo room looking for the mystery water. The man is hanged with some kind of vine and dies. The crew leader accuses Doctor Song of killing him but she denies it. The other doctor runs an examination of the corpse and determines that she was telling the truth. Towards the middle of the series we see the mysterious being. It is a young child with super strength and agility and gills of a fish. It is later learned that the station was designed to run experiments to use the strange water to make new water for Korea. Many people were experimented on(voluntarily but still horrifically). To make sure the strange water was usable. Meanwhile one of the crew finds the body bags of the failed experiments. We learn that the crew leader has a daughter in the hospital. We don’t learn what she has other than legs that bend in the opposite direction. The doctor of his child told him that he has no options to help his daughter due to his lack of access to water. The leader took the job because he worked out a deal with the organization to get a higher status for water privilege to help his daughter with her surgery. Doctor Song comes down with the water disease and eventually reaches the water barf state. However she somehow survives. In a prior episode she was bitten by the child this could have helped her somehow with surviving. I loved this series. It was a perfect blend of mystery and sci-fi. I found it fascinating how the tone of the show shifted from a spooky sci-fi mystery to a Horror movie during the experimentation to a triumphant success story at the end. I am not going to complain that the series morphed the theme of the series frequently but it is an odd design choice to balance many genres in the series. However it was balanced incredibly well. The series was a fascinating watch from every moment I was entranced and curious as to what is going on and unanswered questions start to form very quickly throughout the watch.
